Cette contribution vise à répertorier les traces d’une influence de la mystique dans le corpus fichtéen et à définir un cadre interprétatif pour expliquer le recours par Fichte à un langage mystique dans L’Initiation à la vie bienheureuse. Un examen attentif des diverses sources laisse apparaître que la tradition mystique et Jacob Böhme en particulier, portés par un puissant souffle poétique, peuvent remplir à l’égard de la philosophie un rôle propédeutique par leur capacité à élever le public au suprasensible, mais (...) doivent également y borner leurs prétentions. Fichte dénonce en effet sur un plan philosophique leur caractère dogmatique et ne leur accorde de valeur qu’éclairés par la critique. (shrink)

Pour examiner la consistance des thèses de Fichte en matière de cosmopolitisme et de nationalisme, on prend en compte notamment un aspect peu connu de sa pensée politique, son engagement maçonnique, et on analyse les textes de la période berlinoise, au cours de laquelle le thème de la nation prend une importance croissante. Comment interpréter en particulier les Discours à la nation allemande? Fichte y opère-t‑il une rupture avec les idéaux universalistes des Lumières? Et quel statut accorder à l’idée d’une (...) richesse des patrimoines nationaux à préserver? On cherche à montrer que Fichte reste fidèle à ses vues républicaines et universalistes, tout en reconnaissant l’ambiguïté du recours, pour des raisons stratégiques et rhétoriques, à un registre nationaliste, qui lui est foncièrement étranger. Two thought experiments are discussed which suggest, first, a geometric interpretation of the concept of a (say, vector) potential (i.e., as a kinematic quantity associated with a transformation between moving frames of reference suitably related to the problem) and, second, that, in a quantum treatment one should extend the notion of the equivalence principle to include not only the equivalence of inertial forces with suitable “real” forces, but also the equivalence of potentials of such inertial forces and the potentials of (...) suitable real forces. The two types of cancellation are physically independent of each other, because of the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Finally, we show that the latter effect itself can be understood “geometrically” as a kinematic effect arising upon the transformation between the two reference frames. (shrink)

Ben-Israel and Vaidman have raised objections to my arguments that there are cases where a quantum mechanical weak value can be said not to represent the system to which it pertains. They are correct in pointing out that some of my conclusions were too general. However, for weak values of projection operators my conclusions still stand.

Special issue: Pre ́cis and Commentaries on Veit’s ‘Animal Consciousness’ Abstract: Facing stress and producing stress responses are crucial aspects of an organism’s life and the evolution of both its species and of the other species in its environment, which are co-evolving with it. Philosophers and biologists emphasize the importance of environmental complexity and how organisms deal with it in evolution of cognitive processes. This article adds to these discussions by highlighting the importance of stress physiology in processes connected to (...) plant cognition. While this article supports the thesis that life means cognizing (i.e., sensing the environment, arranging internal processes according to that perception, and affecting the environment with its actions), it also emphasizes that there are various kinds of organisms. In this regard, plant cognition is not animal cognition. However, given both the variety and continuity in evolutionary processes and the similarities even between the distantly related organisms in the tree of life, I argue that it is usually useful to consider and compare physiological and molecular mechanisms in plants and animals as well as the concepts and research processes in animal and plant science. Although the “pathological complexity” thesis that Veit (2023) presents is fruitful in considering the evolution of consciousness and cognition, I argue that, when thinking of biological processes in relation to cognition, stress can be a helpful concept (maybe even as suitable as pathological complexity) in thinking of organisms’ responses to environmental complexity and their adaptation and acclimation processes. Travelling internationally to acquire medical treatments otherwise unavailable or inaccessible in one’s home country is not a novel concept. Conventionally, such medical travel largely entailed patients from developed countries or wealthy patients from the developing world seeking care in Western facilities like the Mayo Clinic in the U.S. and myriad private clinics along Harley Street in London, England. What is different about the topical phenomenon known as “medical tourism” is the growing trend of health services export in the opposite direction. (...) The number of patients travelling from the developed world to low- and middle-income countries for treatments has ballooned in recent years, primarily driven by difficulties with accessing affordable care at home. According to a liberal estimate by the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions, the number of Americans travelling abroad for care rose from 750,000 in 2007 to 1.6 million in 2012.
